About Cannabis Strains

Cannabis has been used for thousands of years. It was discovered approximately 12,000 years ago in the Altai Mountains in Central Asia. (1) Nowadays, it is split into 3 distinct categories that can affect your body in different ways: indicas, sativas, and hybrids.

  • Indica strains are generally known to relax the body for what is known colloquially as a “body high.”
  • Sativa strains are widely considered to help you feel more energized and are best for social outings, exercise, and physical activity.
  • Hybrids may be a combination of indica and sativa strains making for a unique experience that helps you stay energized and relaxed.

How Cannabis Affects the Body

Cannabis strains have a variety of different effects because of their chemical makeup.

Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that can be found in the cannabis plant. The endocannabinoid system is a network of receptors in your body that responds to cannabinoids like THC and CBD. There are more than a hundred different types of cannabinoids, but the ratio of THC to CBD is especially important. It can affect your energy, appetite, blood pressure, pain perception, memory, and immune system.

  • Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC): THC is known for its psychoactive effects. When it enters your bloodstream, the liver breaks it down into 11-OH-THC, also known as 11-COOH-THC, (2) releasing more than 100 enzymes. The ECS- CBD1 receptors along the spinal cord and the CB2 receptors throughout the body bind to THC which changes the way you feel.
  • Cannabidiol (CBD): CBD binds to CB1, CB2, TRPV1, and serotonin (5-HT1A) receptors in the body to relieve pain. Since it binds to different receptors, it does not have the same heady effects as THC and is the best option for relieving anxiety and neuropathic pain. (3)

Terpenes

Terpenes are naturally occurring aromatic compounds in cannabis products that result in different flavor profiles. Just like a custom cocktail at a bar, terpenes add the final touch for a unique flavor. There are six predominant terpenes that give weed its unique flavor profiles: (4) myrcene, pinene, caryophyllene, limonene, caryophyllene, and terpinolene. Terpenes often fall into two categories: woody and earthy or sweet and fruity. The following terpenes are very common:

  • Myrcene: Myrcene comes from hops and has a spicy, pepper-like flavor.
  • Pinine: Pinine is earthy, bitter, and natural.
  • Caryophyllene: Caryophyllene is a warm, woodsy cinnamon and clove flavor with a hint of rosemary.
  • Limonene: Limonene provides a lemony flavor for a citrus-like effect.
  • Terpinolene: Terpinolene is a citrusy flavor with notes of pine.
  • Linalool: Linalool is a terpene with a lavender, basil, and minty taste.
  • Ocimene: Ocimene is an herbal, woody citrus.

More About Indica

Indica, a strain of cannabis well-known for its relaxing effects, is easily identifiable from its shorter, stocky leaves and broad shape. The strain has a higher level CBD to THC ratio, meaning higher levels of CBD produce more of a “body high” that helps you physically relax. Most clients use indica at night because it helps them sleep, relieves stress, and reduces anxiety. These California favorites will leave you with a relaxed, long-lasting high for ultimate bliss.

More About Sativa

Sativa, a strain of cannabis well-known for its energizing effects, is easily identifiable from its long, thin leaves and tapered shape. The strain has a higher level THC to CBD ratio, meaning higher levels of THC produce more psychoactive effects that help you stay energized. Sativa has higher levels of THC, meaning it produces more of a heady high and elevated mental energy. It is best to use sativa in the daytime because it increases your energy and helps you work more productively. Most clients use sativa during the day because it helps them stay productive.
