CBD+THC

Cannabis is well-known for its therapeutic benefits. Products containing both CBD and THC in therapeutic ratios are becoming increasingly popular, making a real difference in the day-to-day lives of people with chronic medical conditions. And, as legal roadblocks to relief continue to fall by the wayside nationally, more and more products are on offer, some of which aren’t such a common sight at the dispensary! But what makes the combination of CBD and THC work so well? And how can optimizing the endocannabinoid system help our bodies?

At Canna Culture, we don’t just sell cannabis; we also share the science behind weed. And when there are exciting developments on our radar, we’re sure to let our clients know about them! We’ll share with you the most effective CBD:THC products, how cannabis works in the body, and the latest nutritional supplements designed with the endocannabinoid system in mind! What Are Cannabinoids?

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that have the ability to regulate cell communication. Put simply, they quite literally change our brain chemistry! Their greatest effects are the following areas.

  • How we perceive our environment (sensory perception)
  • How our bodies respond (somatic perception)
  • How our brains respond (cognitive perception) (1)

The Endocannabinoid System

In 1988, scientists discovered the endocannabinoid system, or ECS. It had always been there, we just hadn’t found out exactly what its function was! Endocannabinoids, also known as endogenous cannabinoids, are natural chemical compounds already present in the ECS. This system regulates many different metabolic functions in our bodies that can affect our appetite, our sleep, our brain’s ability to adapt, and how our bodies deal with inflammation. (2)

Commonly abbreviated as CBD and THC, cannabidiol and tetrahydrocannabinol are phytocannabinoids. Phytocannabinoids are cannabis plant-derived compounds. And they are the active ingredients in a wide range of products that can soothe, calm, and heal the body by altering the way the ECS behaves.

The Perfect Partnership?

Although CBD is known colloquially as “the therapeutic” and THC “the one that gets you blazed”, their combined effects are important to note. Though this may come as a surprise to some, “pure” CBD is rarely as therapeutically effective as CBD and THC combined. In fact, products with a 1:1 ratio can be more beneficial than those that contain no THC at all!

About CBD

First discovered in 1940, CBD accounts for roughly 40% of cannabis extract. (3) However, this percentage can be manipulated through hybridization. Cannabis plants can have high or low CBD percentages, depending on their intended purpose. Unlike THC, as a standalone cannabinoid CBD doesn’t produce a “high,” making it ideal to use therapeutically.

Therapeutic Uses

According to research data, the top 10 therapeutic uses for CBD are as follows.

  • Chronic Pain
  • Joint Pain (Arthritis)
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Insomnia/Other Sleep Disorders
  • Migraine, Cluster, and Tension Headaches
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Nausea
  • Cancer
  • Allergies (e.g. Asthma) (4)

CBD is most commonly available in edible and transdermal forms.  And without getting too scientific with the terminology, your CBD/THC-containing gummies, tinctures, salves, and balms that contain both cannabinoids in varied ratios are that way by design.

About THC

Delta-9-THC is the main psychoactive compound in cannabis. It binds to two receptors in the endocannabinoid system, CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are mostly found in the central nervous system (the brain and spinal cord) and CB2 receptors are found in the peripheral nervous system (the nerves that extend from the spinal cord to the rest of the body). (3) Though THC is widely known for its ability to make you feel euphoric, focus your energy, or float away in couch-locked bliss, alongside CBD, its role is slightly different.

The Perfect Partnership?

CBD products are a non-pharmaceutical way to manage pain, encourage sleep, support mental health, increase appetite, and more. And the fact is,  products with equal or near-equal ratios of CBD:THC get better results

The special interaction between the two most well-known cannabinoids and our endocannabinoid system is the key to their effectiveness. CBD regulates pain perception and limits the potency of THC. What’s more, rather than binding to them like THC, CBD antagonizes receptors in the ECS, and is most effective at doing so with THC present. (4) This is the reason why most CBD products are not psychoactive, even though they contain some THC. What’s more, work better for some therapeutic uses with a little THC in the mix. In some ways, you could say that CBD gets a “helping hand” from THC to work its therapeutic magic in the most beneficial ways!

What is a Full-Spectrum Product?

That “helping hand” we mentioned is known as the entourage effect. The compounds in cannabis that benefit us may have therapeutic effects on their own, but when they are combined, these effects are magnified. If a product on our shelves has the “full spectrum” label. By harnessing the power of the entourage effect, full-spectrum products pass on their most therapeutic benefits to you!
