Cannabis Etiquette: The Dos and Don’ts of Cannabis for Beginners

Cannabis can have many benefits, both from a physical and psychological standpoint. A major reason why some people are afraid of trying cannabis is that, from an outsider’s perspective, cannabis and its associated culture can seem quite overwhelming. For people new to cannabis, it can seem like a daunting task trying to learn all the information that seems like second nature to their cannabis-loving friends. This can include the many strains, consumption methods, and unwritten social norms.

Luckily, we here at Canna Culture know a thing or two about cannabis and are here to walk you through all the dos and don’ts associated with cannabis. From what the best strains and ingestion methods are for beginners to some of the social etiquette associated with cannabis, we can teach you everything you need to know.

Cannabis Etiquette 101: The Don’ts

In general, cannabis culture is associated with a rather mellow, laid-back vibe. As such, when it comes to exploring the world of cannabis, a general rule of thumb is “less is more.” Adopting proper cannabis etiquette is not so much about what you do, but it is about what not to do. As such, it is only fitting that we start with the “don’ts” of cannabis culture.

Don’t: Drive after consumption.

This is one of the biggest rules that consumers should follow. While cannabis can be a very relaxing and enjoyable product to consume, driving while under the influence of cannabis is still driving under the influence. Do not put yourself or others at risk.

Don’t: Consume strains with increased levels of THC when you are new to cannabis.

Cannabis contains the compounds tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). (1) THC is known for producing the psychoactive effects of cannabis, allowing consumers to feel the relaxing benefits and wellness effects. CBD, on the other hand, does not produce psychoactive effects, but rather is known for its calming, medicinal effects it has on users. Most cannabis strains will contain some combination of these two compounds, with THC-dominant strains producing more of a psychoactive effect, while CBD-dominant strains produce a mild and relaxing experience.

If you are new to cannabis, it is best to start with CBD-dominant or less-potent THC strains. By opting for CBD-dominant strains while you are still learning about cannabis, you can minimize your risk of overindulging. One of the Canna Culture staff members can help you find the best strains for your experience level to ensure a pleasant introduction to cannabis.

Don’t: Dominate the conversation.

It’s totally fine to mention that you’re feeling the effects of cannabis, especially if you’re new to it, but try not to make it the main topic of conversation. If you’re hanging out with others who are more experienced, they’re probably looking to relax, chat, or enjoy the moment together. Cannabis is best when it adds to the experience, not takes over. If you ever feel like you’ve had a bit too much, take a breather and focus on enjoying the vibe and the people around you.

Don’t: Take more edibles because you are not “feeling it yet.”

Edibles can take quite a long time to kick in, with some edibles taking several hours before users feel any effects. If you ingest cannabis in edible form, especially on a full stomach, do not consume any more for at least a couple of hours. If you take more edibles too quickly, you could end up taking way more than you wanted to.

Cannabis Etiquette 101: The Do’s

When first starting to explore cannabis, there are plenty of things to be cautious of, from both a consumption and social standpoint. However, cannabis is meant to provide a positive experience for users, so it is good to focus on things you should do with cannabis, just as much as what you should not.

Do: Experiment!

One of the great benefits of cannabis is that there is no shortage of ways to consume it, and each strain of cannabis produces its own unique set of effects. This means that the cannabis experience can be tailored to fit each individual’s needs. When you are just starting to use cannabis, it is good to experiment with a variety of different strains to see what effects you enjoy most. For example, Indica strains tend to produce a more calming, sedative effect, while Sativa strains produce a more energizing and creative effect. Furthermore, there are seemingly endless ways to consume cannabis, such as smoking, vaping, and edibles, but the list does not stop there.

Finding what strains and methods for consumption you enjoy will help ensure a pleasant experience with cannabis. With an extensive menu of cannabis products, Canna Culture has everything you need to explore to determine what your ideal cannabis experience is. Do: Contribute to the group

As someone new to cannabis, if you show up to a social function where cannabis is involved, you probably were not the one who brought it. While many cannabis users are very generous and would be happy to share with you, you do not want to develop a reputation as a person who mooches off others. If you show up to a social function empty-handed, at least be the person who brings some snacks or perhaps a speaker to help liven the mood. If someone offers you their cannabis, something as simple as offering to contribute can go a long way.

Do: Be mindful of your health.

Cannabis is often associated with a variety of therapeutic benefits. (3) With this in mind, there are some potential side effects associated with cannabis consumption that are less than ideal. Try to prevent your cannabis usage from getting in the way of maintaining healthy lifestyle habits, such as having a proper exercise routine. Perhaps try incorporating cannabis into healthy activities such as hiking or running. Additionally, if you know you are going to partake in cannabis consumption, it might be a good idea to stock up on healthy snacks.

Do: Treat cannabis as an enhancement to whatever you are doing, rather than centering whatever you are doing around cannabis

Cannabis can make many experiences more enjoyable. Nature can seem a little more beautiful while hiking, and music sounds a little more sensational after partaking. The key is to use cannabis as a way to make whatever you are doing a little more enjoyable, but try not to let it get to the point where the entire activity you are doing is an excuse to partake. Cannabis can complement your lifestyle, but it’s important to keep it in balance with your broader goals and routines.

Do: Expand your social circle and be inclusive.

Cannabis can be a great way to connect with others, but it’s also great to spend time with people who have different interests and lifestyles, whether they partake or not. Keeping a diverse social circle can bring fresh perspectives, help you stay balanced, and make your overall experience with cannabis more well-rounded and enjoyable. Inclusivity and variety in your friendships can enrich your life both in and out of cannabis-related settings.
